Royal grew up as a pastor’s kid in small town Alberta. He has seen his home turn from an abandoned ghost town to one of Alberta’s gems.
In 1976 Royal’s father Winston moved the family to the hamlet of Rosebud , (population 40) across from the garbage dump. The first order of business was trekking over to the dump and tidying up the more unseemly garbage strewn about. By the end of the day the hill looked much nicer, but the next day the wind picked up and blew all the garbage back on to the hill. Today the dump is the signature hole at the Akokiniskway Golf Course.
Royal grew up here, moved away, went to art school, and came back to help establish Rosebud Theatre.
About Royal
Many of you may know Royal from folk duo Lewis & Royal or as an actor on the Rosebud Stage. You may have seen The Canadian Badlands Passion Play which he has directed the past five years. But what Royal formally studied was drawing at The Alberta College & Art of Design. He is returning to his first love, drawing, and to the challenging task of running his own gallery.
